Best of 2014

Is it too late to post a “Best of” list for 2014? It was so hard to get up on Monday and go back to work for a full week as well as start another class at school. Getting up and out of bed the past few days have been a challenge. It is freezing here in Pennsylvania and no matter how many layers you wear, going outside is literally painful.  Anyway, here are my favorites from last year.

best_of_2014

DressModCloth I love your dress I love these dresses so much that I have one in 3 colors. ModCloth just released two new colors Burgundy and Cobalt. The Burgundy keeps going out of stock, but I was lucky enough to order one earlier today. The dress is very versatile and can be worn in spring, summer, and fall. Although the fabric is thin, I still am wearing it this winter. Heavier tights, sweater, and boots make it work.

Boots – G by GUESS Gadget Bootie In the beginning of fall I looked everywhere for a good pair of black booties. I now have 3 pairs and these by far have been my favorite. They are comfortable and actually warm. It looks like DSW is almost sold out online though.

Lip GlossL’Oreal Colour Riche Balm & NYX xtreme lip cream Both of these products are incredibly affordable, which is why I have several and always keep one of each in my purse. I prefer these over lipstick when I’m at work or just doing something casual.

NailsGelous Nail Gel This isn’t really much of a substitute for gel polish. It removes just like regular polish but, does seem to keep it from chipping right away. I think it also keeps my nails a little stronger.

Skinboscia Purifying Cleansing Gel I added this to my skin care routine later this year after experiencing several break outs. After using it nightly for a few weeks I did see an improvement in my skin and will purchase it again. The price is a bit high but, it is very gentle on sensitive skin and a bottle will last you a few months.

BookNot That Kind of Girl by Leena Dunham In 2014 I really got into the Girls show and once I heard Leena was releasing a book anxiously waited for the release date. The book was incredibly entertaining up until the end. I enjoy Leena’s raw, gritty, truthfulness and the fact that she is so comfortable and confident with herself.

PaletteToo Faced Chocolate Bar Eyeshadow Palette Also high up on my list of favorites is Urban Decay’s Naked Basics 2 Both of these palettes offer high quality shadows in neutral colors that can easily be toned down or vamped up. I picked the Chocolate Bar palette over Naked Basics 2 because I just cannot get over the fact how amazing it smells when you open it up.

Thanks to everyone who posted a favorites list, I have several products on my 2015 list to purchase!

Blogmas Day 8 My Holiday Party Attire

I skipped out on my work’s Holiday party this year because I wasn’t feeling too well. This weekend I have two party’s to attend. My Husband’s work party is on Friday night at a hotel with a sit down dinner. So, I wanted to dress a little fancy, but not over the top. I found the perfect dress from The Limited and got a great deal on some heels from Modcloth.

party attireI decided to go with a black and gold theme when I purchased this dress. Unfortunately, it is sold out online, but may be in stores still. I paid about $80 for it which is a great price!

The shoes I got from Modcloth on a deep discount for $25. Of course they are sold out as well.

Luckily I’ve had a black lace shrug already from when we got married 5 years ago. I hate taking large bag to functions like this, so I’m still not sure what I’m going to do about a clutch. I may check out some thrift stores or Target. You do not need to spend an exorbitant amount of money to look good!

As for make up, I’m going to try to do a black/gold smokey eye. I say try because I have never been able to master the smokey eye look. I’d love to be able to wear fake lashes as well, but when I attempted that last week I had glue stuck to my eyelid for two days. I’m going to go with a nude lip and gold nail polish.

Friday Favorites October 24th

1.) Simply Vera Vera Wang Print Shift Dress This past weekend I needed to do a little shopping for some fall/winter appropriate work attire. I find that Ross, Marshall’s, and Kohl’s always have something decent and reasonably priced. One of my favorites is this Vera Wang dress. The quality of the material is superb as it is silky but still heavier to keep you warm during the season. The sleeves have a strip of sheer fabric running from the wrist to the shoulder. In my opinion tie waists are very unflattering on my body type so, I paired it with a thin light brown belt that I placed just above my waist. (One day I’ll get around to taking outfit photos)

2.) Banana Nutmeg Bread Pudding Candle Do you like Bananas? Do you like Banana Bread? Do you just like things that smell like yummy food that are inedible, but they smell so amazing you want to eat them anyway? THEN BUY THIS. Bath & Body Works always has great deals going on and hand out coupons practically every time you buy something.

3.) BCBGeneration “Anders” High Wedge Booties I need these boots. At first I thought they’d be a bit too much with all the buckles and zippers but after wearing my other black boots to work day in and out I need something with a little more flare. I’m waiting for them to go on sale…tomorrow.

4.) Merona Women’s Knee High Socks (Target) My favorite look right now to go along with fall/winter dress is the legging/sock/boot combo:

socks2

Target sells really supper cute knee socks for $3 a pair and then ones that are a bit more fancy (like the ones pictured in my post.) By fancy I mean they are ribbed and have adorable little buttons. Anyway they have an awesome variety of colors and patterns. I may purchase some leg warmers for later this winter, but for right now this is a good substitution.

5.) Lena Dunham’s Memoir-ish ‘Not That Kind of Girl’ You either have to love or hate Lena, there is no in-between. In my opinion she is so incredibly talented and real. I watched her movie “Tiny Apartments” a long time ago and thought that it was meh. It wasn’t bad, it held my attention, but was still very dry. Then I check out the HBO show “Girls.” After a few episodes I was hooked. There are times that I sit there and wonder “why am I watching this?”  Yet, I find the interaction between the characters and dialogue hysterical.

Like the show, the book is a bit raunchy at times, funny, serious, and even sad. The book is made up of short essay’s on Lena’s life experiences. Like Lena, I too have had some bizarre experiences throughout the past 32 years. Most of them I would not share with anyone let alone publish them in a book.  Yet, after reading about her experiences I feel a little less embarrassed about my own. Lena is brave and empowering. Her honesty and confidence make me re-evaluate my own insecurities.

Ugly Betty is the Modern Day Clarissa Explains it all

clarissa

It’s no secret that I’m old, well I’m not THAT old, but I grew up during the 90’s and whenever I read or see something that reminds me of those times I get all warm and squishy inside reminiscing about the days of my youth. Nickelodeon was really popular during those days and one of my favorite shows, along with other girls my age was Clarissa Explains it All. She changed her outfit about five times during every show and by the end of every episode I would run to my closet to see if I could re-create Clarissa’s outfits.

Unfortunately, it just never worked out that way. I had plenty of sweaters, stretch, pants and jean overalls to class, but what I lacked was confidence. It takes a lot of confidence to wear clothing that is not the typical style especially when you are an awkward teenage. Despite the fact that almost two decades have gone by since Clarissa explained it all, I still like her look.

Moving on… I am an original member of Netflix. Meaning, I have been a member since it was born. I was ordering Netflix moves when Blockbuster and Hollywood video were still popular. I was one of the first members of Netflix Instant. So, I feel I have every right to say this, Netflix incredibly disappoints me. It was amazing when it first came out. The selection of movies on instant, especially the amount of unknown indie movies was glorious. Now, members are forced to watch shows created by Netflix (orange is the new black is the only one worth watching) and tons of old TV episodes.

A few months ago my poison was Desperate House Wives. I binge watched that show and finished 7 seasons in about a month. I like to watch mindless things while working on school work and being able to watch a quick episode of something between school work breaks is convenient. Late last month I start watching Ugly Betty. At first, it was kind of boring. I found America Ferrera’s character to be a little whiny and spineless, but that is just the nature of her character. Although her wardrobe was a bit over the top, I start to dig the mix matching ensembles.

Now that I am nearing the end of season 3 and about to hit the last season, despite the fashion, and the fact that I’d like to work for a New York fashion magazine, like all long running shows it is lame. I understand, writers run out of ideas and this show has pretty much run its course. Of course I will be watching a movie if they actually put one out! Especially if Bette Midler has a cameo role.

And so I leave you with some polyvore collages I put together. Clarissa vs. Ugly Betty. If you are into mix matching patterns and styles I’d love to see pictures of some of your outfits! I could use a little inspiration to spice up my typical black winter wardrobe!

Friday Favorites September 26

Here we are at the very last Friday in September! I think I may be revamping my blog and changing up the colors a bit sometime… that is when I have time. I tried something a little different this week with my favorites as well. Believe it or not, finding 5 things you really love each week is really hard. Sometimes I lay awake at night digging deep into my subconscious to try to figure out great products to post. I wish I could go out every week and buy something new to test out, but like every other average person, I have to watch my spending. Besides that I’d take a Pumpkin Latte over a new lipstick any day!

ff1.) Hikari Lipstick in Cabernet This dark berry lipstick was included in my monthly Ipsy bag. The shade is a tad too dark but, goes well with the darker shades of the fall seasons. I applied the color on before work one morning and it lasted a few hours before fading out. To extend the life of lipstick I recommend getting a nude or similar shade lip pencil to the lipstick you are wear, line, and fill in your lips. This allows the lipstick to bond to your lips more and stay in place. Also, don’t forget to blot! Forgo the expensive liners and go pick up wet n wild, rimmel, or any other cheap drugstore brand. Here is a photo of me from this morning with the lipstick on:

2.) Chinese Laundry Boots Yes, I finally decided on a pair! These came in the mail yesterday and I was so excited to wear them to work today. Unfortunately, the wacky Pennsylvania weather put a kibosh on that when the temperatures were supposed to go up into the 80’s today. I tried them on last night though with my black leggings and they are exactly what I was looking for. Eventually, I’ll be purchasing a different style as DSW conveniently sent me a coupon along with my order.

3.) Modcloth’s I love your dress in Olive I now own all three colors of this style dress. This olive one in particular is another great staple for a fall wardrobe. Once the cooler temperatures hit I plan to pair it with a black cardigan, black leggings, and boots. As I already said before, the fabric is very comfortable and flattering.

4.)  OPI Lost on Lombard Nail Polish This was a suggested purchase by the Husband. Although judging from the bottle I thought I had several similar colors, I was pleasantly surprised when I applied it. The shade is basically a muted burgundy and very classy. If you are looking for a darker burgundy, but want to avoid using a blood red color, this is perfect.
