Mediocre Monday – Disappointing Beauty Products

I’ve tried hundreds of beauty products over the years, some were highly recommended and others were impulse purchases. Clearly, each and every person has their own favorites that work for them that may not work for others. Below are a few products that I found very disappointing despite their great reviews.

1.) Benefit They’re Real Mascara Benefit’s products have never disappointed me. Although they are a bit pricey, the quality is great and usually well worth the price.  It was time for me to purchase a new mascara and after reading all of the great reviews, I decided to try this one. While it does make your lashes look full and longer, I found that it left a residue under my eyes by the end of the day. Meaning, it left tiny black flakes under my eyes. This is an on going issue that I have with mascara. Besides the flakes after two weeks the part where you twist on the lid broke off so I had to throw it out.

2.) Malibu C Hard Water Weekly Demineralizer  This is a product another blogger mentioned on their site and highly recommended. My highlights get brassy because we have hard water. It is not that big of a deal, but I thought I’d try it out to see if I could brighten them up and maybe last longer between hair appointments. The product consistency is a bit weird because it is a white powder. I expected it to be more like a cream conditioner. After a few uses I found that I didn’t notice a difference other then the fact that it majorly dried out my hair.

3.) NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base Besides their blushes this is the only other NARS product I’ve tried. Again, it had high reviews and I was looking for a quality eye primer. Through out the years I’ve tried many different primers and many of them ended up leaving creases in my eye shadow. After a few hours the shadow would settle into the creases and look clumpy instead of smooth. This product is very sheer and has an applicator that you’d normally find on a lip gloss bottle. Using the applicator was a bit difficult and the primer did not lock my shadow into place. By the end of the day, all of my eye make up wore off.

4.) e.l.f. High Definition Powder When I ran out of my go to Make Up Forever Powder, I decided to purchase this one to use in the mean time. It was cheap and I just happened to be at Target, so I picked it up. It comes with a powder puff applicator which picks up way too much product. I used another brush, but still looked pale white. The product isn’t translucent and does not sink into your skin to hold in the foundation. Again, you get what you pay for.

5.) Maybelline New York Dream Bouncy Blush This is another product that had great reviews. The consistency is really odd and almost rubbery. I applied it with Real Techniques by Sam & Nic Chapman Stippling Brush and it went on okay and actually was a pretty color. A few hours later, it wore off. Isn’t the point of a cream brush to actually last longer? If I used blush powder over it to set it, it did last a bit longer but was still disappointing.

1.) Benefit’s Go TropiCORAL Lip & Cheek Kit I bought this set because I wanted to try High Beam, but did not want to spend $30 on a product that I might not like. I love Benefit’s mini kits because they allow you to try out several products for the price of one. This kit is one that I use regularly especially the combination of the tint and blush. When I use the blush alone I do not think it holds up as well as it does when I use the combination of both. The lip-gloss is very sheer with a tint of coral and not sticky!

2.) Urban Decay’s Virgin Eye Shadow This shadow is one that is included in the original Naked palette. I’ve used it so much that I hit the pan! It is similar to MAC’s Shroom shadow. I prefer this Urban Decay shadow over MAC because the product is a little more powdery and soft. $18 is pricey for one shadow, but I have not been able to find a drug store color that is similar and the same consistency.

3.) Modcloth I Love Your Dress in Black I mentioned this dress I purchased before in an earlier post, but it was in the plum color. Modcloth finally re-stocked my size in black! The wonderful thing about Modcloth is that if you decide to return something and get a store credit rather then money refunded, they give you an additional $5 credit.

4.) Glamglow ‘Youthmud’ Tinglexfoliate Treatment A sample of this product came in a Birchbox I received. I do not often use treatments like this on my face in fear that I may break out because my skin is overly sensitive. Although the consistency is strange as I literally felt like I was putting mud on my face, I noticed a huge difference in my skin. My face felt a lot softer and it did minimize my pores. The only downside is that it is very pricey.

5.) The History of Love by Nicole Krauss I read this book years ago and still remember it today as being one of the most beautifully written books I’ve read. The book touches on the emotions of love and loneliness, yet at times is funny. When I read non-fiction I often have difficulty connecting with characters. Some authors push their characters personalities to the extreme making them very unrealistic. Krauss’s characters are simple yet complex and face similar situations that we do in everyday life. The story revolves around two separate characters who are unaware of each others existence, yet their lives are intertwined together. I believe the most appealing part about this book is Krauss’s style of writing. Here is one of the many beautiful quotes taken from the book:

“Even now, all possible feelings do not yet exist, there are still those that lie beyond our capacity and our imagination. From time to time, when a piece of music no one has ever written or a painting no one has ever painted, or something else impossible to predict, fathom or yet describe takes place, a new feeling enters the world. And then, for the millionth time in the history of feeling, the heart surges and absorbs the impact.”
― Nicole Krauss, The History of Love

Also, I just read that MAC is releasing a Simpsons line August 28th! The packaging is adorable!

1.) Lush Cosmetics – Vanilla Dee-Lite Lotion We do not have a local Lush store where I live so whenever we do get to visit one in our travels, I smell all the pretty soaps. I picked up this lotion just to smell it and I knew that I absolutely had to have it. It legitimately smells like vanilla cupcakes! Besides it’s amazing smell, this product is very creamy and moisturizing. I find that in the winter time my skin gets super dry and using this lotion after showering really locked the moisture into my skin. The scent left on your skin lasts for hours but it is not over powering.

2.) Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers While the title as well as the topic of this book may be offsetting for some, it is actually a very informational yet enjoyable book. The Author, Mary Roach, shares the information she has gathered on what happens to human cadavers. From medical experimentation to transportation safety research it is surprising to learn all of the productive uses for human cadavers. This book is written with the utmost respect and recognition for those who have chosen to donate their bodies once they pass. It is educational and at times shockingly humorous. It may be too gruesome for some, but as a medical hobbyist, it has been one of my favorite reads.

3.) Benefit Cosmetics Fake Up Concealer $24 is a bit pricey for a concealer, but this product is well worth every penny. I use this on a daily basis as an under eye concealer. The formula is very creamy and glides on effortlessly. The additional vitamin E in the product moisturizers the under eye area. Many concealers I’ve used in the past settled in the fine lines under my eyes which made them look cakey and dry.

4.) Loreal Colour Riche Balm This by far the best lip balm I’ve purchased since my Bonnie Bell days. I’ve never really been a big lipstick person. It is pretty and all but give me lip gloss, balm, chapstik, etc. I like that this product is so sheer yet still gives a hint of color. The consistency is very light and smooth the perfect combination in my opinion.  I have it in a few colors but my favorite is probably nourishing nude.

5.) real Techniques Starter Set I purchased this set at Ulta because I needed some more eyeshadow brushes. I have several MAC brushes which are great, but pricey. This set is very reasonably priced and excellent quality. It’s been well over a year since I’ve purchased these and they have held up as well as my MAC brushes.
